Critiquing Photography

Writer's picture: Nathan LuNathan Lu

Part 1

I like this photo in particular due to the entertaining subject of the photograph. The bright yellow magnets pop out from the grey backdrop of the car, providing two main focus points of the photo following the rule of thirds. They each are artistic rearrangements of "Novice Driver." Furthermore, the head-on perspective of the photo makes it seem as though the viewer is driving directly behind this vehicle. The hardest part of the assignment was choosing the best category for each of the photos, since they can often fall into multiple categories. In the future, I want to be able to use differing depths of field to create the proper feel for the photograph that I am taking.

Part 2: my comment on Jade Barrett's Blog

Hello Jade, I am always a huge fan of photos taken from mountaintops and I like how you are looking away from the the camera into the distance rather than the usual stare straight at the camera and say cheese type of photo. I especially appreciate the shadows of the clouds onto the landscape. This would make for a great aesthetically evaluative photograph as well. It would be interesting to play with where to stand in relation to the position of the camera in order to create the desired effect without blocking large parts of the landscape.

I like the entertaining context of this photo. It shows an interesting perspective of American comedy and leaves its true meaning up to interpretation. I think that a lower range of focus would benefit the comedic value of the image.
