Emulating a Professional Photographer

My photo (left) inspired by Gregory Crewdson's photo (right)

Part 1

I think this was my most successful image for multiple reasons. The first reason is that I think it captures Crewdson's photographic style in many ways, as this image was inspired by many of his photos, not just the one on the right. Crewdson often liked to take images in a panoramic style, where oftentimes there is a vehicle or person in the distance which draws the viewer's attention. This is because his photos capture such a large portion of the scene, giving a fly-on-the-wall perspective if you will. His photos also give an odd feeling that makes the viewer question life's meaning, as I am reminded of the monotony and often emptiness of life. The hardest part of this assignment was taking panoramic shots without making the scene look distorted. In the future, I want to consider what emotions I want to express in an image and capture the scene with the appropriate techniques to convey it.

Part 2

My Comment on Saunders Penn's blog:

Hello Saunders, I think you did a great job recreating Mann's photographic style, especially in the expression of the woman in the photo. The black and white filter really helps to set the mood and atmosphere of the photograph, as the viewer's attention is drawn more to the contrast and texture of the image, which is brought out even more with the side lighting. I think moving the chair more into the light would bring out the woman's face, as well as the whiteness in the upper half of the chair.

Hi Nathan, Thank you for sharing your photos. The panoramic photograph you took came out really nice. Not only have you skillfully framed a landscape that is visually appealing, but you've also managed to convey a sentiment reminiscent of Gregory Crewdson's photography. The photographs that you present give off a feeling of seclusion which can make the viewer have many different types of feelings towards it. Overall the photographs came out great, but the only advice I have for your photograph is playing around with the different types of lighting to really portray all of the characteristics in the photograph. Keep up the great work!

Hi Nathan, thanks for sharing your photos! I think your panoramic photo came out great! I have a difficult time taking panoramic photographs - mine always seem to look warped. You have not only successfully captured a landscape scene that looks aesthetically pleasing, but also I think you did a great job capturing a feeling similar to Gregory Crewdson's photo. Both photos give off a quiet, dreary, secluded feel, which leaves the viewer feeling contemplative. I liked the exposure, contrast, and color saturation used in your image. I thought you did an excellent job making the image bright enough to see while highlighting some of the colors in the foreground. In the future, I would recommend you keep experimenting wit…
