My comment on Saunders Penn's presentation: Hello Saunders, you did a really good job describing David Hurn's photographic style through your choices of his works and explanations. The way you described how he captured everyday human activities through black and white gave real meaning to his work as the viewer can picture himself or herself at the scene using and activating all the senses. In Hurn's work, I see him attempting to capture as much of the human experience as possible in a photograph. These pictures are a great portrayal of how "a picture is a thousand words" and in each of my future photos, I want each to tell a unique story. Hurn's photos make me feel a little sad as they reminder me that life is short.
Hi Nathan! I think the two photos you focused on in your presentation were a good representation of different sides of Welling's photography. From historical photography, to more contemporary conceptual photography, you provide a description about each, and how they relate to the photographer's style, and how they emulate meaning through the props present. One suggestion I would make is maybe having a few more photos in the presentation, perhaps some that are a stepping stone between the two ends of his photography spectrum. I like the concept of Welling having a wide variety of subjects to choose from based on the representational photos he takes. This presentation also takes some pointers from chapter 4, and includes some concepts from…
Nathan, this was a really enjoyable and easy to understand presentation. You definitely gave good background of the photographer and some of the work he completed. You also did a good job relating the photographer's work to information from Chapter 4. I feel your analyzation with the color schemes and subjects of the photographs were true and on point. Once suggestion I would make is to include a few more photographs from the photographer in the presentation. It was good to see the ones you put in, but I feel a few more would have added more justice for the scope of his work. However, besides this, it was all in all a great presentation!
Hi Nathan, I enjoyed your presentation. Your explanation of the photographer and his work was well done. You were very clear in explaining the photos and what they captured. I thought it was helpful the way you explained what type of photographer he is and what kind of photos he captures. The photo of the group of men singing opera in black and white caught my eye because of how it captures Opera so well. It was very intense and showed how energetic and passionate the subjects were in the photo. I thought you analyzed the photographer and his photos very well and used information from chapter 4 well. One suggestion I have is including more works from him.
Hi Nathan, great presentation! Your in-depth analysis of both the photographer and their work was excellent! I appreciated the background information you shared about James Welling, as well as two photographs that he captured. I liked the way you explained what was happening in each photograph and included your thoughts and feelings in the presentation. I especially liked his "Dark Matter" photograph, as he successfully captures a foggy and gloomy feel, using analogous colors. I think you analyzed Welling's photographs effectively to include information from Chapter 4 of Criticizing Photographs. One suggestion I have would be to include more examples of Welling's work. His photographs are incredible, however, I have a hard time comprehending his photographic style based on only…
